Working with Triotherm+: Cutting, Drilling and Adjusting

Triotherm+ can be cut, drilled and adapted on site using standard woodworking and construction tools.

Because the material is lightweight and easy to machine, installers can adjust profile lengths, widths and heights directly on site where required.

 

Cutting Triotherm+

Triotherm+ can be cut using standard woodworking and construction tools.

For cutting profiles accurately to length, a mitre saw with a coarse longitudinal-cut blade is recommended.

A suitable example is the blaugelb HW saw blade:

The coarse tooth geometry helps produce a clean cut while reducing heat build-up in the material. Standard fine-tooth timber blades can become blunt relatively quickly when used repeatedly on Triotherm+.

For smaller or less critical cuts, a hand saw or jigsaw can also be used. Where precise dimensional adjustment is required, particularly when reducing the height of an upstand, a circular saw, table saw or band saw can be suitable.

If the saw has an adjustable speed setting, a medium cutting speed is generally recommended for improved control and cut quality.

Do not use angle grinders or cut-off saws with abrasive discs, as these are not suitable for cutting Triotherm+.

Drilling Through Triotherm+

Triotherm+ can be drilled using standard drill bits.

When fixing the upstand to the structural substrate below, drill through the Triotherm+ profile and continue into the supporting concrete, masonry or blockwork as required for the specified fixing.

The fixing should be selected to suit both the Triotherm+ system and the structural substrate.

 

Fixing Triotherm+ to the Substrate

Triotherm+ door upstands are mechanically fixed to the supporting structure in accordance with the system requirements.

Where brackets or additional support components are used, these should be fixed securely to the Triotherm+ upstand and anchored into the supporting structure.

The exact fixing arrangement depends on:

  • the substrate
  • upstand dimensions
  • projection
  • load requirements
  • door or window system

The complete fixing arrangement should always be considered as part of the load path.

 

 

Joining Triotherm+ Profiles

Triotherm+ profiles incorporate an integrated dovetail connection, allowing individual profiles to be joined together to create longer upstands.

The connection should be assembled carefully so that the profiles remain aligned.

Where required by the system detail, the joints should also be bonded and sealed using the specified PowerFix Adhesive.

Working with Structural Insulation Boards

Triotherm Structural Insulation Boards and MultiPro Structural Insulation Boards can also be cut and adapted using standard tools.

These boards can be used in combination with Triotherm+ profiles where additional width or height is required.

When combining different components, ensure that:

  • all contact surfaces are clean
  • cuts are accurate
  • components are fully supported
  • specified adhesives or sealants are used where required
  • the final assembly remains level and dimensionally stable

How to Adjust the Height of an Installed Triotherm+ Door Upstand

Minor adjustments may sometimes be required after installation.

Where the installed upstand is too high, the material can be carefully reduced using suitable cutting or planing tools.

Any adjustment should be carried out evenly across the support area so that the door or window frame remains fully supported.

Avoid creating isolated high points or unsupported areas beneath the threshold.

Where significant height changes are required, the detail should be reassessed rather than simply removing large amounts of material from the installed upstand.

 

Handling Triotherm+ on Site

Although Triotherm+ is a robust structural insulation material, good site handling is still important.

Profiles and boards should be:

  • stored flat
  • kept clean
  • protected from unnecessary impact damage
  • checked before installation
  • installed on a suitable, level substrate

Damaged components should not be used where the damage could affect the structural support or sealing of the final installation.

The Important Point

Triotherm+ is designed to be easy to cut and adapt on site.

Standard construction and woodworking tools are generally sufficient for cutting, drilling and adjusting the material.

The key is to maintain:

accurate dimensions, full support, correct fixing and proper sealing.

That ensures the final door upstand remains structurally sound and properly integrated into the building envelope.
